CONDITION

VOLUME 1

The spine is intact and unbroken and in very good condition. No spine wear or colour fade. The binding is tight, no loose pages.The top front outer edge of the spine shows slight wear (where the front cover hinges on the spine. See images in "Home". Covers are dark green leather corners, and spine and green cloth board covers Gold embossed lettering and decoration on the spine. 0.5" cut upper right front cover. Pages show minimal colour fade for their age, not significantly. Some spotting on inner covers. 

24 colour plates, numerous black and white.

VOLUME 2

The spine is intact and unbroken and in very good condition. No spine wear or colur fade. Slight wear to top outer edge of the spine where the cover hinges. Colouring and materials for the covers and lettering as above. Front cover shows spotting in 3 places and whitening to areas of the leading edge. Rear cover shows some fade in mid areas, not significantly. Inner covers show some spotting, again not significantly. Pages show minimal colour fade for their age.

23 colour plates, numerous black and white images. (See "Colour Plates")

The general presentation of the books is very good.

SIZE; Each volume is 11" x 8 3/4" x 1 3/8" (28cm x 22cm x 3.5cm)

WEIGHT; 1.870kg each volume.

THE ANNOTATIONS

There are 44 pages that have been annotated. They range from written discussions that take up the whole of the side margin and the bottom margin in one case, to single word or pharse changes. All of the annotations that make comments are signed "H. G. W." There about 27 of these. They are all in ink.  In at least two of these, there are referrals to discussions with other parties, including those credited in the Frontispiece with editorial assistance and advice. There is one penciled note in Vol 2. See "Vol 1 Annotations" for examples. Volume 2 annotations will be added shortly, for resaearch purposes, now that the volumes have been sold.


ABOUT THE OWNER

The volumes were owned by Mr Peter Howell (Actor) and were passed into his posession by his father, who was an admirer of H G Wells.  The volumes are currently owned by a private collector.
